After the Glock match we drove to Stone Mountain Park. This is a big park built around Stone Mountain, which was started in the 1920's as a tribute to the fallen Confederate soldiers. It was designed and started by the same person that carved Mt. Rushmore. It is an 800' high granite rock that has a huge carving (90'x190') of Robert E. Lee, Stonewall Jackson and Jefferson Davis. It is very big and very impressive. There is a cable car that goes to the top of the mountain. Anyone who knows me will be very surprised that I actually went to the top! Of course, I got out and immediately got in the next car going back down but I did it, as the photos will show. Wayde, Gary and Joyce stayed on top of the rock to explore, brave souls that they are. We then rode on The Duck, which is an amphibious bus. We got duck lips and thought it was very appropriate for us Oregon Duck fans. we started out in a ride around the park and then drove right into the lake! It was great fun. Unfortuntely, the park was closing at this time so we couldn't enjoy the rest of it. We decided to come back the next day so we could tour The Plantation. We thought it was going to be a reproduction of old buildings but found out they were original buildings that had been moved there. There was a log cabin from the late 1700's, a house from the early 1800's, two houses used as slave quarters, a barn (with animals), the cookhouse and the main antebellum house from 1830. The furnishings were antiques from the time period of the different buildings. This pretty much satisfied my wanting to see a real plantation on our trip. It was great. We then again toured the Kennewaw Mountain museum, then drove through Marietta which a wonderful old town with lots of old houses. We ate good bbq at Sonny's in Conyers, Georgia. The Smith's have to leave tomorrow for Oregon. We will hate to see them. go.
